Hello, I’m Melissa.
… and I want you to know you don’t have to carry everything alone.
I know symptoms of trauma can linger, shaping how you see yourself and the world. Even if years have passed, emotional pain can show up in your relationships, your work, and even invade your thought life until nothing feels ‘normal.’ Anxiety can make even the most ordinary days feel overwhelming, and depression can feel intensely draining.
The human experience is so complex, and coping with anxiety and trauma can make life feel even heavier. If you’re exhausted from managing mental or emotional health concerns, please know – the issue isn’t ‘weakness.’ Most likely, the issue is that your nervous system has been on high alert for far too long, and all these mental health symptoms are signs your body and mind are ready to experience release and deep healing.
About me
I’m Melissa Zawisza, LCSW-S. I’ve been in the mental health field since 2003 and became a licensed therapist in 2007. For over 20 years, I’ve worked in schools, community agencies, and a hospital trauma center. Those settings taught me how trauma shows up in real life – not just in textbooks.
Today, I provide therapy in Arlington, TX and virtually across Texas through Reilly Counseling, PLLC, my private practice.
I am
An EMDRIA-Certified EMDR therapist
A Board-Approved LCSW Supervisor
An EMDRIA Consultant-in-Training
Specialized in trauma-focused CBT, DBT, attachment-based therapy, and IFS-informed approaches
My style is professional, steady, and direct – but warm. I remain calm and grounded, which helps clients stay emotionally regulated in session. Your safety is my highest priority, and that includes the ‘felt sense’ of safety. Safety is both a reality and a feeling, and for therapy to accomplish its best work, you need to feel safe.
If I sense you’re spiraling or becoming triggered, I’ll gently invite a pause, help your nervous system regulate, and then we’ll proceed at a pace that is safe for your nervous system. Part of what makes therapy effective is its relational structure. I take an assertive but compassionate approach to keep my clients emotionally grounded in every session.
While I will always welcome verbal processing and am committed to holding space for your lived experiences, I
work to ensure each session is productive so that you feel not just heard and seen – but accepted and supported.
Who I work with
My clients are courageous. Most of them come to me after coping with severe anxiety and/or unresolved trauma. While I offer therapy for a wide-range of trauma topics, a significant percentage of my clientele seek trauma-informed therapy for relational trauma, family of origin trauma, and traumatic experiences relating to physical health. I am also specialized in working with clients with PTSD and Complex-PTSD, especially clients seeking EMDR-therapy for past trauma.
I WORK WITH
Adults navigating trauma, anxiety, grief, depression, and self-harm
Adolescents (13+) struggling with anxiety, depression, overwhelming emotions, or painful past experiences
Individuals across Arlington, DFW, and throughout Texas via virtual therapy
Licensed therapists in Texas seeking clinical supervision and EMDR consultations
ABOUT MY CLIENTS – A CLOSER LOOK
Many of my clients find me during a season of life where they feel misunderstood and severely discouraged. They’ve tried coping on their own, they’ve tried numbing, they’ve tried pushing through, and at times, they’ve minimized or invalidated their own experiences – just to try to feel better.
But therapy provides an empowering opportunity to address what’s underneath. You don’t need to white-knuckle your way through personal growth or get lost in the spiral of surface-level symptom management. Trauma-informed therapy can provide you with a safe space to finally address what’s underneath.
Together, we’ll get to the source. We’ll explore the deeper issue, address the root cause, and utilize evidence-based techniques to help you achieve lasting change and post-traumatic growth.

WHAT DOES ‘TRAUMA-INFORMED’ THERAPY MEAN?
Because trauma lives in the body, simply ‘talking about our problems’ is often not enough to experience relief. My style is relational, experiential, and rooted in polyvagal-informed principles that allow our therapeutic work to go beyond traditional talk therapy techniques.
Trauma therapy is not about rehashing painful memories and reliving moments we wish never happened. We’ll always honor your experiences, but the focus is less on what happened and more on how what happened is showing up in the present moment. If we do discuss past trauma, the dialogue will be done in a grounded way and with a solution-focused perspective.
Why I help
Because healing restores dignity. I’m inspired by the innate resilience of the human spirit, and I find immense fulfillment in helping people overcome painful experiences. I know from personal and professional experience that it takes courage to pursue healing. With time, compassion, and practice, we can learn how to respond instead of react and to connect instead of withdraw.
For me, therapy is so much more than a profession – it’s also a calling. I’ve seen how untreated trauma impacts families, schools, and communities. And I’ve also seen what happens when people finally feel safe enough to process their experiences and release the hurt.
What happens to us doesn’t define us. The symptoms of trauma are treatable, and many symptoms can be greatly reduced or resolved entirely. Trauma therapy can be a powerful step towards overcoming past pain and reclaiming your inner peace.
What I believe
The nervous system can be rewired and trained to learn safety again.
Part of healing from trauma is helping the nervous system learn that what happened is not longer happening. Traumatic experiences can change us in ways that hurt, but post-traumatic growth is possible. There are many research-backed ways we can neutralize or reduce the impact of trauma. We will always move at a pace that honors what your nervous system is experiencing. If I sense spiraling, I’ll gently interrupt, invite a pause, and help facilitate emotional regulation before continuing.
Application and integration are essential for healing.
In-session therapy is not enough to bring about lasting transformation. Yes, psychoeducation is important, and I definitely ensure my clients are well-equipped with useful knowledge and insights. But insights without application is just information. For true healing, we need integration – and that requires participation and growth beyond the therapy session.
Therapy needs to be both compassionate and effective.
It’s an honor to hold a healing space for my clients. Whatever is on their mind and whatever emotional weight they’re carrying, I want my clients to feel safe bringing all of it. From setting goals to tracking progress and adjusting as needed, I take a collaborative and structured approach to therapy. My balanced approach ensures clients feel not just seen and heard but also supported.
Taking the next step
Coping with invisible triggers and managing anxiety can be exhausting. Sometimes the emotional wounds are invisible, but other times, the symptoms are intrusive and can infiltrate daily life. If your thoughts are spiraling or painful past memories are haunting your current reality, trauma-informed therapy can offer the gentle interruption your nervous system needs to recalibrate and heal.
If you’re curious about exploring therapy with me, I invite you to schedule a complimentary 15-minute discovery consultation. This no-risk, no-obligation time is simply a meet-and-greet. I’ll be happy to answer any questions you might have and help you determine if my approach fits what you’re looking for.
Whenever you’re ready, I’m here.
